FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Michigan Tech earned a non-conference sweep of Alaska with a 6-2 victory Friday at the Carlson Center. Six different Huskies scored as Nick Nardella had three assists as the Black and Gold improved to 2-1 on the season.
“The third period was our best, and after the sixth goal we were able to take the wind out of their sails,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “I’m proud of his effort, and it always feels good to win. Nardella was fantastic tonight. He competed all game, and I thought we got a good goaltender. Blake played big.”
Jake Crespi got the Huskies on the board at 16:02 when he tapped in a cross-crease layup feed from Nick Nardella. Crispi’s first of the season and seventh of his career was assisted by Parker Saretsky, who had three points of the night.
Brett Thorn added to the lead just 1:12 into the second period when he finished off a backdoor pass from Nick Nardla and Jake Crispi. It was Thorne’s first of the season and seventh of his career.
Alaska (2-3-1) quickly got it back to a one-goal game 1:12 later when Matt Cote hit a long shot from Garrett Pike in traffic.
Trevor Russell scored the first collegiate goal at 6:43 to give Tech a 3-1 win. Ryland Mosley and Chris Lipe worked the ball with Russell to calmly lead to two goals.
Logan Pietila scored Tech’s second shorthanded goal of the weekend at 8:59, taking a long pass from Parker Saretsky and low glove over the goalie for his second of the weekend and 23rd of his career.
Parker Saretsky scored Tech’s fourth point at 13:39 of the period when he found some space in the gap and finished off a feed from Nick. Saretsky has two goals and nine assists on the season.
The Nanox rebounded with 63 seconds left, as Harrison Israelite took the ball off the skid and crossed the goal line on the power play. TJ Lloyd and Brady Risk were credited with assists.
Jack Worth scored his first college goal 7:05 into the third. He stole the puck in the neutral zone and chased down the low blocker.
UAF outshot Tech for the second night in a row 25-19. Blake Pietila made 23 saves for his 37th career win. UAF’s Matt Radomski gave up two goals on six shots and was replaced by Daniel Allen in the final 31:01. Allyn recorded 11 saves.
Tech was 4-for-5 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Huskies return home next weekend and open CCHA play against Bemidji State. The puck drops at McInnes Student Ice Arena on Friday at 7:07 pm and Saturday at 6:07 pm.
