NYU’s School of Global Health (NUGPH) has joined a global initiative starting in New York City to envision how cities can address heart health inequities.
AI4HealthyCities Health Equity Network—Created by the Novartis Foundation in partnership with Microsoft AI for Health, the AI4HealthyCities Health Equity Net addresses heart health disparities. These data-driven insights show how to improve health outcomes by changing social, economic, and environmental factors such as housing, pollution, access to fresh food, physical activity opportunities, racism, wealth, and lifestyle.
“At the global and local level, health inequity is shaped by economic conditions and access to resources,” said Anne Erts, head of the Novartis Foundation. “In New York and other cities, we believe data and AI-based insights will help stakeholders make informed decisions about impactful urban heart health interventions that ultimately reach the greatest number of people.”
Applying data science and artificial intelligence to health and neighborhood data can help urban policymakers target public health resources on interventions that can have the greatest impact on cardiovascular disease—the world’s number one cause of death and a leading driver of health inequity in the US.
“People are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease because of where they live and work in New York, and their social and economic disadvantage, rather than access to health care. As part of AI4HealthyCities, NYU GPH will partner with Microsoft AI for Health to lead research in New York City collecting data on cardiovascular disease and key determinants of heart health. The researchers assessed which social determinants were most associated with high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart attack and stroke. It affects about one in four New Yorkers.Especially black and Latino adults. The project aims to create a neighborhood-level cardiovascular risk score and map that local health leaders can use to guide their efforts to improve heart health.
