Golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are entering the technology and entertainment space with the launch of a new venture called TMRW Sports, which will create “progressive approaches to sports, media and entertainment.”
The duo counts former NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersole as an investor, along with veteran sports media executive Mike McCarley.
Ebersol said in a statement: “I haven’t taken on any real work since I retired, other than mentoring a lot of friends, but with the few people I’ve been doing it with, this is the right idea.” “Mike and I know him intimately, his impeccable track record in the business and most importantly witnessing firsthand the way he communicates – I bet on what he can create. So, when he told me his vision of what he was building with Tiger and Rory, I couldn’t wait to find my way in.”
McCarley was president of NBC Sports Golf and Global Strategy, overseeing the company’s golf portfolio, including the Golf Channel. Prior to that, he served as senior VP at NBC Sports.
Although McCarley said in a statement that the company has “many exciting projects” in development, TMRW Sports is somewhat quiet about what it will develop.
Woods added in a statement that he hopes to “build a better future for sports fans” and “use technology to bring new approaches to the sports we love.”
McIlroy added that he believes the company “can shape the way media and technology can improve the sports experience.”
“In a world where technology gives us so many options to use our time, we want to make sports accessible to as many people as possible,” he said.
Additional investors and partners in TMRW Sports, as well as the projects, will be announced later.
Athletes are looking beyond the fields, courts, fields and courses in their professional careers.
NFL legend Tom Brady is a partner in both a sports-focused content company (Sports Religion) and an entertainment studio called 199 Productions. LeBron James owns SpringHill (recently raised $725 million), tennis star Noami Osaka is starting her own media and entertainment company, Hana Kuma, with SpringHill’s backing.
