| Ashley Nemec-Back, a postdoctoral fellow in the UAMS College of Pharmacy Radiation Health Division and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is one of three researchers nationwide to receive a postdoctoral fellowship. TRISH is supported by NASA’s Human Exploration Program, whose mission is, in part, to support the upcoming Artemis missions, which aim to put the first woman and first person of color on the Moon. The Institute funds innovative and disruptive research that can improve and protect human health and well-being wherever they explore.
“Developing the next generation of space health researchers is one of our strategic goals,” said Dorit Donoviel, PhD, executive director of TRISH. “Our goal is to prepare a diverse workforce from diverse scientific backgrounds to help astronauts solve the challenges of future missions to the Moon and beyond. We are excited to welcome this next cohort of graduates as they help us move closer to that goal.”
“We are thrilled to be working with TRISH,” said Nemec-Back. “With this funding, we can investigate the cardiovascular effects of a simulated space environment. This research will help NASA determine how the heart is affected by space travel and what preventive measures may be appropriate for future space missions.”
Nemec-Back joins two other researchers in the new fellowship group, which is supported by the TRISH Bioastronautics Academy, which provides two years of research funding. Using her research background in the effects of heavy ion radiation on the cardiovascular system, she will use two new ground-based deep space travel models to study the effects of radiation and microgravity on the shape and function of the heart, major arteries and veins. Nemec-Back received her Master of Science degree in Free Radical Biology in 2016 and her Doctor of Philosophy in the Radioactive Embryology Program in 2020 from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. She joined UAMS in January 2021.
Led by Baylor College Medical Center’s Center for Space Medicine, TRISH is a consortium that includes the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. NASA has given the institute a six-year extension to continue its work on developing earth health technologies and providing disruptive solutions to reduce biomedical threats to humans.
