Veteran Austin uses military training to save his business
With his dream business on the line, former Marine 1st Lt. Mark Phillips used what he learned on deployment to save.
Austin, Texas – Almost five years ago, FOX 7 Austin introduced viewers to former Navy First Lieutenant Mark Phillips as he achieved a seven-year dream.
That dream was opening his own microbrewery and taproom.
Peace Sign Brewing got off to a great start, but then came the challenges. The three-year construction project on 183 was almost impossible to reach his place, then the epidemic happened. All of High Mark Brewing is about to close.
“I just didn’t have anybody brewing, I didn’t have a staff. And I took out a sticky note and wrote YCF, you can’t fail. So I went in and I knew there was more riding on this than myself.” he said.
While pursuing his dream business, the lessons he learned about deploying in Helmand province began to take off.
“It was a parallel mentality to being a commander in Afghanistan. For me, the YCF mentality was… it was like you can’t fail your Marines. If you do the job poorly, plan, don’t do the job poorly. Train them properly,” Phillip said.
His big plan was to relocate the business.
It took him almost three years to do this, all while knowing that every day brought unexpected twists, turns and challenges.
“There’s training that doesn’t leave you when you’re done with your contract. There were times when I woke up during COVID, and we had one employee. I thought to myself, ‘There’s nothing worse than this today. Losing the Navy, this thing is good…we’re going to make beer.'”
And the beer is pouring again at a new location at Hay Sign in East Austin.
Almost everything is new, the staff, the equipment, the plumbing. One thing that is not new is the training and mindset that served Philip on deployment and continues to serve him.
