NEW YORK (AP) — Tourists and New Yorkers crowded around Rockefeller Center’s roller skating rink on Saturday as they tried to catch a glimpse of the flamboyant statements on display at Victor Glamaud’s latest New York Fashion Week show.

For the Haitian American designer who grew up in New York, the show had emotional meaning but also served as a pointer in his career as his brand grew. He launched the label in 2006 and has since collaborated on a collection with Target and ventured into home furnishings with Schumacher.

Glamaud’s show opened with roller skaters wearing signature sweaters, blasting across the Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace rink, laughing and dancing as guests watched. It continued with a collection of elegant models, eye-catching cuts, a few coats and a new eyewear collection.

Glimaud drew inspiration for his modern sportswear from a recent trip to Harbor Island in the Bahamas. Glimaud said he wanted the collection to feel effortless, fun and “something you’d want to wear in the summer.” Models strutted around the rink in skin-hugging wraps that looked like they came from an ocean resort.

Glimaud’s brand was one of the record-breaking 28 black-owned brands on display at this year’s New York Fashion Week.

“We put in the effort, and we love this industry,” Glimaud said of his fellow black designers. “And, you know, our businesses are mostly owned and operated. Fashion week means a lot. So, it will be more fun.”

During the pandemic, the designer founded “IN THE BLK”, a non-profit organization to support black creators in the fashion industry.

“It’s about bringing together not just fashion designers, but co-creators,” he said.

The Glamour show brought out a handful of TikTok celebrities, including fashion influencer Britney Xavier.

“I love that his collection is inspired by summer and togetherness,” she said. “The kind of energy we’ve lost in the last two years.”

While Glamaud relies on a minimal color palette and one animal print, that doesn’t stop the youthfulness of his designs from shining through in his playful cross-sections. They elevated the dress with a subtle sensuality and gave a stylish update to the swimsuits.

V-shaped gowns and leopard prints were considered the show of the night, if not for one moment: As the show wrapped, Glamaud’s mother, Julie, began to do so. Tears of pride.

“The vibe, the love, the joy,” she said. It’s always fun with Victor.
