HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Physicians from across Mississippi gathered with medical school students at William Carey University for the first-ever conference on rural health care.
Organizers of the first-ever Rural Health Summit at WWU hope it will improve care in areas such as diabetes and mental health.
The event started on Friday night and ended on Saturday afternoon.
“Most of our state is rural and the issues we face in rural America are different than the ones we face in cities,” Italo Subrao Dean said. at the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Presentations were made by various doctors at the conference. More than 12 different presentations and workshops were held at the event.
“If I’m learning about health care disparities, socioeconomic status, I think all of these factors play a big role in health care, and that’s what we learned here during the conference,” Monica Daswani said.
It also includes hands-on workshops.
“Conferences like this highlight the importance of bringing knowledge and sharing it with the rest of the community,” said Stephen Farrow, executive director of the National Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute. Research institute.
“We’re really all pulling in the same direction. It’s not just William Carey or community service providers,” said David Purchase, Mississippi State University Extension Service state health specialist. “We’re really all in this together.”
Among those who could benefit the most from the conference are future physicians like WCU student Andres Saucedo.
“It’s one thing to learn about it in the books,” Saucedo said. It’s another thing to hear experts say, “These are the challenges we face in society.”
