Velas Jones was absent for the Chicago Bears’ preseason opener against Kansas City. He was dealing with an unknown injury. So people had high hopes for the first time in Seattle against the Seahawks. Things did not get off to a good start. He had a nice 30-yard penalty to open the game but was knocked down. Hopefully, it was pretty brutal and he could calm down as things progressed. Those promises have been fulfilled.
After a good 52-yard drive, the Bears defense forced a Seahawks punt on the next series. Jones got another chance to make a play. He didn’t give up. He picked off the 3rd down and ran it back 48 yards. His trademark speed was on full display. At the age of 25, the receiver has been able to remind people that he’s in the NFL for a reason. He has considerable talent.
Velas Jones will help unlock this Bears offense.
That kind of speed is rare, even for the NFL. It was a big reason why GM Ryan Pauls targeted him in the draft. However, his ability goes beyond running fast. His quickness, agility and strengths are other factors. The man is dangerous with the ball in hand. This game is one example. It was no surprise that the Bears didn’t get much use out of him offensively the rest of the game. They are not going to show their hands on their plans.
Veles Jones is a tool. They think there is something special about their interpretation. The punt return was just a small taste of what they saw in action last month. If he can carry this big-play ability into the regular season, the Bears will suddenly be a more dangerous football team. He and Darnell Mooney could make a nasty combination. The coaches will no doubt be anxious for the real games to begin.
