A massive forest fire in northern Kazakhstan has burned tens of thousands of hectares and displaced nearly 2,000 people, the head of the Office of Crisis Management said Saturday.

The wildfire broke out in Kostanay province on Friday and quickly spread over a large area, burning 9,400 hectares (23,230 acres) by Saturday night, Aibol Akbarov told reporters.

Four villages have been displaced and the entire region is in dire straits. Hundreds of firefighters and more than 50 fire engines are battling the blaze.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will travel to the region on Monday to visit the executive headquarters, the press office announced. Tokayev told the government to open an emergency fund needed to deal with the crisis.
