23 NYC Health + Hospitals Doctors Recognized for Excellence at Annual Doctors Day Celebration

Doctors in a variety of health systems, from primary care to surgery, are nominated by their chief medical officers for accreditation.

NYC Health + Hospitals celebrated Doctor’s Day today and recognized 23 doctors at NYC Health + Hospitals/ for their excellence in establishing the LGBTQ+ Health Center and doubling the capacity for women’s health services at NYC Health + Hospitals/. Bellevue, and increasing rates of influenza and HPV vaccination among adolescents. The doctors were selected by the Chief Medical Officer of their institution to be eligible for the award. President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz and Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michelle Allen joined The View at Battery Park staff to recognize the outstanding doctors at the nation’s largest municipal health system. Dignitaries include:

  • Dr. Deborah Ottenheimer In the summer of 2021, Morrisania joined NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health as director of women’s health services, where she doubled the program’s patient care capacity. Her expertise includes providing forensic medical evaluations of asylum-seeking women. abortion services at Planned Parenthood in New York; Emergency care for earthquake survivors in Haiti, as well as talks for local midwives; a free clinic for uninsured Hurricane Sandy survivors in Remote Rockaway; Development of an assessment of mass rape of children in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Development of a multi-specialty clinic for women affected by female genital mutilation; and establishing a refugee health program for survivors of torture.
  • Dr. Robert Anwar Pitts He founded what is now known as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue’s Pride Health Center, which now cares for nearly 400 LGBTQ patients, 20 percent of whom are uninsured, 20 percent of whom speak a first language other than English, and 80 percent of whom are black or Latino. None of them became HIV positive in five years of care thanks to several new and compassionate approaches, including a clinical trial of long-acting injectable PrEP.
  • Dr. Thomas Richardson Over the past three years as a supervising physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health School-based health centers, he has increased flu and HPV vaccination rates among adolescents. He also launched and coordinates Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Sydenham Reach Out and the Literacy and Literacy Support Program.
