Here are five times sports have influenced mainstream fashion.

Sneakers are arguably the most popular (and well-worn) sports item to be part of our everyday wardrobe. The history of the humble running shoe goes back to the 18th centuryTh Century. It begins in 1839 when American Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber. This innovation led to the creation of “plimsole” shoes featuring rubber soles. The US Rubber Company began selling the ever-popular Keds by reinventing the shoe.

In the year In 1917, Converse released its own signature shoe, the Chuck Taylor All Star. That shoe was worn by the US basketball team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and US sprinter and four-time gold medalist Jesse Owens wore runners designed by Adolph (Adi) and Rudolf Dassler, brothers whose rivalry would go on to found the Adidas and Puma brands. But these shoes were still mostly used by athletes. In the year In the 1950s, fast-forward and rebellious youth began wearing sneakers, much to parents’ dismay.

But it wasn’t until the 70s and 80s that brands like Nike began marketing sneakers to the general public, especially Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan brand. Not long ago, sneakers were a staple of streetwear, with hip-hop helping to bring the item right into the mainstream. Rappers like Run DMC wore their black and white Adidas trainers everywhere they went, a trend that continues today with the likes of Kanye West’s coveted Adidas Yeezys.

Surprisingly, the “Polo” shirt was not originally designed for polo. It was created for tennis. Invented by French tennis player René Lacoste, the short-sleeved cotton shirt was designed as a comfortable alternative to the restrictive flannel pants and sweaters commonly worn in “tennis whites.” In the year He made an appearance at the 1926 US Open and, after retiring in 1933, founded a company that sold polo shirts for tennis.

His shirts featured a crocodile logo in recognition of his nickname “Le Crocodile”. The shirts became known as “polo” shirts because polo players adopted Lacoste’s new tennis shirt instead of the long-sleeved collared shirts they had previously worn. In the 1950s, it was known as a polo shirt, even though it was invented by a tennis player for tennis. The shirt eventually moved from the locker room to our closets as TV and movie stars embraced the casual outfit, inspiring mods and preppies everywhere.

Letterman jackets started out as a tribute to athletes, but today they make a show anywhere anyone wants to pull off that “All-American” jock look. The style of the jacket traces its origins to the Harvard University baseball team and its efforts to identify its best players. In 1865, players began wearing thick wool sweaters emblazoned with the university’s “H.” Only the best performing players kept the uniform, making it a symbol of success.

The heavy woolen uniform soon evolved into the pullover cardigans and woolen and leather jackets we know today. It wasn’t long before the varsity jacket was adopted across the US as a status symbol in high schools and colleges. The style then spread to pro sports and fan merchandise, where it began to seep into mainstream and pop culture. You may remember Michael Jackson wearing a red and gold jacket in his classic “Thriller” video, and hip-hop artists like RUN DMC and NWA took to the streets in style in videos and on stage. Today, various fashion brands offer their own versions of the Varsity jacket, and its appeal doesn’t seem to be waning anytime soon.

Tracks are everywhere today. Kids hanging out in the park wear them, adults go to the grocery store in them, even though they are associated with aspects of organized crime. In fact, most people today never wear sweatpants for any actual sports activities.

Thanks to martial artist and Hong Kong cinema icon Bruce Lee for popularizing the item. Nylon and cotton color-coordinated pants and shirts have been around since the 1960s, but when Lee, who was beyond cool, started donning them in his movies, the stretchy sportswear entered our collective fashion consciousness.

Yoga pants are another piece of sportswear that has outlived its usefulness. What started as something meant only to be worn behind the closed doors of a yoga studio became a mass popular and widespread fashion phenomenon. It’s also seen as a controversial trend in academia, with many schools banning students from wearing form-fitting leggings. If you’re looking for someone to blame, athletic apparel company Lululemon can often be credited with taking yoga leggings to the mainstream and all. Real Housewives alum’s Instagram feed.
