TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The building that once housed the Death Branch Library on Dorr St. stands empty. Many Toledo City Council members agree it needs some development from the new Mott Library and the neighborhood.
Vanis Williams, Toledo City Council, District 4, said: “I believe the area needs something.” Williams said she supports a project to breathe new life into the site. However, she expressed her frustration at a May City Council meeting.
Compassion Health Toledo plans to build a second clinic here. The group’s existing clinic is located in the old South Branch Library on Near South Broadway. Compassionate Health purchased the former Death Branch Library from the city for one dollar.
After Williams and other council members signed the agreement, Sandy Spang, the city’s business services commissioner, said they realized they were on the Compassion Health board in 2019 and would eventually step down. They said they changed their opinion on the deal.
Today was about rezoning.
“This had nothing to do with anything other than a zoning change. Yes, I can say that I was not happy with the process, and I will continue to say that. ‘Was it fair?’ I keep saying. I don’t think so,” Williams added.
For now, the plan calls for a half million dollar renovation of the facility to open in 2023.
