MILAN, Sept 23 (Reuters) – Fashionistas saw doubles at Gucci’s Milan Fashion Week show on Friday, as the Italian luxury label sent identically dressed twins down the runway to surprise onlookers.

Creative director Alessandro Michele paid tribute to the twins and their show, called “Gucci Twinsburg,” for the Ohio city’s annual festival of twins.

The presentation began with single models walking down the catwalk, before the wall rose to reveal their siblings on the other side wearing the same clothes.

Siblings hold hands as they walk together in a dramatic finale.

“I’m the son of two mothers: Mama Eralda and Mama Juliana, two extraordinary women who made their twins the ultimate stamp on their lives,” Michelle says in the show notes.

“They lived in the same body. They wore their hair and combed their teeth in the same way. It was magically mirrored. One multiplied the other. This was my world, perfect double and double.”

Michele’s designs began with a red belted skirt paired with a black jacket and pant-like legs. Biker jackets were paired with cropped skirts, shiny silver jackets were cropped and had big shoulders, prints on colorful dresses featured spanners and bolts.

The models also wore floor-length trench coats, floral kimono-inspired designs and flowing silk dresses. Accessories include long beaded jewelry and sunglasses, leopard print tights and snakeskin boots.

“It’s the impossibility of perfect similarity that feeds the magic of twins,” Michelle said.

“Twinsburg, by playing this game, stresses the relationship between original and copy. As if magically duplicated clothes. They seem to have lost their individuality.

“The effect is distant and ambiguous. Almost a rupture in the idea of identity, and then a revelation: similar clothes bring out different characteristics on similar-looking bodies.”

Milan Fashion Week runs until Monday.
