ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – While work is well underway on 4th Street in downtown Anchorage, a few businesses in one of the buildings being redeveloped by Peach Holdings LLC are preparing to close their doors.

Jana Hainga, owner of Cabin Fever and Quilted Raven – who has been at the location for 24 years – called it an important step in the Block 41 redevelopment project.

“We would have loved to stay but that’s not all – it can’t happen,” Hayenga said. They go ahead with a new building and this building has to come down. I have to move, it’s part of the change.”

Hyinga has been an Anchorage business owner for 42 years, owning and operating such memorable businesses as Flyers, Classic Toys and a one-time bookstore. She has seen many ups and downs in the industry but is excited to have the opportunity to move her stores on the road. The owners of Side Street Espresso are retiring, and Hyinga plans to take over the lease.

“We will be renovating and renovating both businesses – Cabin Fever and Quilted Raven – beginning in November with the hope of relaunching them in a revamped format,” Hyinga said.

A $200 million investment in the downtown project sparked a stir among residents who want to save the historic 4th Avenue Theater landmark, but demolition began in early August to remove the landscape.

Hyinga’s current lease is expiring, and the limited liability company has honored the deal. The new location is about 1,000 square feet smaller, so the business owner is currently trying to sell inventory before moving.

Cabin Fever and Quilted Raven will close their doors on October 1, with hopes of reopening on the street in February next year.
