CENTRAL OHIO – An Ohio woman is sending a warning after her mother died of a heart attack.

What you need to know

  • Margaret Martin’s mother suffered a heart attack while preaching and died shortly after.
  • Weeks before this happened, Martin noticed that her mother had chest pains.
  • Martin has been an advocate and fundraiser for the American Heart Association ever since.

Every step Margaret Martin takes outside Atrium Hospital in Middletown is reminded of what happened to her mother.

Her mother was a former pastor at a small church in Dayton.

During a service, Martin knew something was wrong with her mother.

“‘Mommy, why are you rubbing your breasts?’ I told her,” said Martin, “Oh, it’s okay, it’s okay.” … Every time this happened, she was dismissive. The pain.”

After a few weeks the chest pain got worse.

“She went to preach at another church, a visiting church, and suddenly she got sick on the stage,” Martin said.

Martin’s mother had a heart attack and gave her last words to her son from her hospital bed.

“I put my ear down to what she was trying to say, ‘Mommy, are you in labor?’ “I told her,” Martin said, “you have to take care of everybody.”

Those words were her mission.

In the three decades since her mother’s death, she has been warning people about the symptoms.

“We have to take care of our bodies, we have to listen. I mean, I’m not saying every little thing we have to run to the doctor, but that was a big one for me,” Martin said.

She is involved in fundraising for the American Heart Association, including during its annual fundraiser around the hospital.

Every year she takes those steps for her mother so no one else does.

“Someone else’s family can save their mother or father from an accident,” Martin said.

Advocates and families recently completed the annual Heart Walk for Butler/Warren counties.

This year they raised nearly $30,000. American Heart Association.
