Houghton, Mich Nationally ranked 19th-ranked Saginaw Valley State University used a balanced offense and strong second-half defense as the Cardinals beat in-state foe Michigan Tech 35-13 in a nonconference football matchup on Saturday.

The Cardinals, who improved to 4-0 on the season, rolled up 413 total yards, including 205 on the ground and 208 through the air. The host Huskies (1-3) could muster just 176 yards of total offense.

More details to come later……

First Quarter:

  • Derek Hinton Jr. gave Saginaw Valley a 7-0 lead with 9 minutes, 23 seconds left when Andrew Brito hauled in a 20-yard pass that eluded two tacklers in the backfield and threw the grain to find an open Hinton.
  • William Marano cut Michigan Tech short to make it 7-6 when he crossed the goal line from three yards out with 4:10 left.

Second Quarter:

  • Tech used some tricks to open the second period at 14:16. Ethan Champney took a sidestep from quarterback Will Arch and threw 30 yards to Brandon Michalak in the end zone for a wide open reception. The Huskies were 13-7.
  • However, this advantage quickly evaporated on SVSU’s next possession; Isaiah Malcolm ran 75 yards into the end zone for the Cardinals’ longest play of the season for a 14-13 lead with 14:04 left.
  • Malcolm found the end zone from seven yards out to cap the first half scoring drive and extend SVSU’s lead to 21-13.

Third Quarter:

  • With 9:04 to go, Brito ran a yard out into the end zone to cap an eight-play, 40-yard scoring drive with 3:49 left. The Cardinals held a 28-13 lead.
  • Brito and receiver Arron Foulkes connected for a 13-yard strike with 5 minutes left for some insurance and the eventual 22-point victory.

Fourth quarter:

  • Neither team scored in the final quarter.

In the box result:

  • This was a designated non-GLIAC game. That will be a conference game between the schools when Michigan Tech travels to SVSU in the regular season finale on Nov. 12.
  • Malcolm rushed for SVSU’s career- and game-high 145 yards on 20 carries, or 7.2 yards per attempt, and a pair of touchdowns.
  • Brito finished a clean 16-for-20 with 208 yards passing and two TDs.
  • With four receptions, the Hinton junior led all receivers with 97 yards.
  • Trevor Nowaske and Micah Kresger led the SVSU defense with seven and five tackles, respectively.
  • Darius Willis led the Huskies offense with four receptions for 71 yards.
  • Tech’s Mark Sippel led all defenders with 9 tackles and 11 total.
