SALT LAKE CITY – Utah has long been popular in the technology industry, with Silicon Slopes boasting companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, Domo and Oracle.
Now, another distinction can be added to the list: the ranking of the top 10 best states to work in tech.
According to new research by document management company SmallPDF, Utah is number 9.
It analyzed data such as wages, employment rates and job openings to create the list, according to a news release.
Utah earned the ranking for the highest number of high-tech jobs in the state, with 39.09 jobs per 1,000 in tech positions, according to a SmallPDF analysis. Additionally, there are 62.38 tech job openings for every 100,000 people.
The company found that the median annual salary for tech jobs in Utah is $86,600, and 27.1 percent of that salary goes to rent. To arrive at this percentage, SmallPDF weighed the median annual salary with the state’s median annual rent, according to the news release.
Utah’s tech prowess was on display at last year’s Silicon Slope Summit. Cicero CEO Trent Kaufman presented the data gathered in partnership with BYU, saying “everything we have in Utah is an ongoing talent war”; Apple CEO Tim Cook told Sen. Mike Lee during a fireside chat that he sees people in Utah tech companies who want to change the world.
Just below Utah in the rankings is Nebraska, with an average tech job salary of $81,090, 17.55% of which goes to rent. 32.63 technology jobs per 1,000 jobs; and 52.4 technology job openings per 100,000 people.
Virginia is No. 1, Maryland is No. 2, and Washington is No. 3.
Virginia’s median annual tech salary is $110,510, according to SmallPDF research, with 21.68% going to rent. The state has 58.44 tech jobs for every 1,000 jobs and 128.97 tech job openings per 100,000 people.
Maryland’s is $110,790, with 19.97% going to rent. And Washington’s is $124,000, with 21.24% going to rent. Maryland has 54.35 tech jobs for every 1,000 jobs and 116.27 tech job openings per 100,000 people. Washington has 59.32 tech jobs per 1,000 people and 61.69 tech jobs per 100,000 people.
The other top 10 states from fourth through eighth are Colorado, Massachusetts, Delaware, Minnesota and New Jersey.
SmallPDF also reported that Mississippi is the worst state to work in tech, with a median annual salary of $70,870; 11.857 technology jobs per 1,000 jobs; and 16.03 technology job openings per 100,000 people.
