The prevalence of depression – a sad feeling that lasts for a long time and interferes with normal and daily activities – among children increased by 89% from 2004 to 2020, while the rate of treatment increased only nominally.1 Mental health conditions among adults increased by 19 percent from 2008 to 2020, including nearly 21 million adults with depression.2 Rates of depression are higher among young adults, women, and people of many races. 3
In the United States Suicide claimed nearly 46,000 lives in 2020.5 It is the second leading cause of death for children aged 10-14 and adults aged 35-44, and the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15-24. 6
