Two of Lymand Health Solutions’ probiotic strains have been approved for two Canadian health claims, paving the way for the strains to be marketed as helping babies develop the same gut microflora as breastfed babies.
These claims for Bifidobacteria baby Rosell-33 and Bifidobacteria bifidum Rosell-71 include:
- Helps maintain a baby-like microflora in infants (for formula-fed infants
- A formula-fed baby can help maintain a balanced microflora similar to that of breastfed babies.
Research
There are two studies based on this health claim. The first is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Researchwhere The child’s b Rosell-33 was evaluated as safe and well-tolerated in 221 healthy infants aged 3 to 12 months.
A post-hoc AnalysisA 2017 study from Manzano showed that based on a sample of infants. The child’s b Rosell-33 is able to maintain a baby-specific microbiome profile rich in lactose-digesting bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, regardless of factors such as diet, birth conditions, etc.
On the other hand, the placebo group showed a significant increase in the common elements of the gut microbiota of healthy adults and a decrease in Bifidobacteria. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory IL-10/IL-12 ratio increased over the eight-week dosing period, while the placebo group shifted more toward an anti-inflammatory state.
“The sciences that have been carefully obtained in the past years and these diseases continue to receive official recognitions, evaluating the safety and beneficial effects on the child-specific microflora. This is a big step that shows that our probiotics contribute to the support of the normal gut and immune system. Maturity in early life, “said Solange Henoud, vice president, regulation and compliance at Lomond Health Solutions.
“Strong Characteristic”.
Both types can be added in fixed galanic formats such as sachets, sticks and drops or in raw powder directly into infant formulas.
“The industry is showing great interest in developing highly nutritious infant milk with specific ingredients that meet all the requirements of this particular market. Considering the limited number of known strains suitable for infant formula, probiotics can be a strong distinguishing feature and open the door to the infant probiotic category.”said Henod.
Henod added that both Bifidobacteria baby Rosell-33 and Bifidobacteria bifidum Rosell-71 are already recognized as GRAS, so they can be added to baby formula as direct probiotics or infused with direct probiotic powder in baby bottles.
Parental awareness
“Parental awareness of the role of the microbiota in early life is increasing over time in promoting gut and immune maturation. This awareness of the important role of the gut microbiome extends beyond the gut.”Henoud told NutraIngredients-USA.
UNICEF’s ‘Early Moments Matter’ report reveals that parents are realizing the importance of the first 1,000 days of life and how they shape children’s future, from brain development to immunity and even happiness.
And according to the FMCG Guru 2021 Early Life Nutrition Survey, more than 42% of parents said they intend to give their child probiotics. This puts probiotics behind protein, but ahead of omega-3 in the nutritional supplements space.
