The Alabama Department of Public Health announced Monday it will no longer allow comments on its social media posts starting next week — a move that has been met with both praise and criticism.

“Effective Monday, October 3, 2022, the Alabama Department of Public Health will disable the comment function on all posts. This will be effective until further notice, the agency announced Social media accounts.

“We came to this decision after careful consideration of the overall nature of comments and conversations on our social media accounts,” the announcement continued. “The mission and purpose of ADPH is to promote, protect and improve the health of Alabama, and we believe this decision will allow us to better fulfill that mission.”

Some Alabamians welcomed the decision, saying it would help curb the spread of conspiracy theories surrounding Covid-19 and other health topics.

“I can’t say I blame you. People here are crazy,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. Thank you for your service to the government.

Another Facebook user commented that the decision “[w]Great idea.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done during this crazy time. I’m in the medical field as well. It’s definitely been a rough ride. Too many people don’t follow the guidelines anyway,” he said.

The new policy has sparked outrage from Alabamians who say the agency is silencing dissent.

“Basically what you’re saying is that no one has the right to question you openly and you’re being part of a communist government.” wrote one commenter. A lot of mistakes have been made around covid and a lot of questions are still unanswered and this basically proves that you don’t want public accountability.

Another added: “They realized they could no longer intimidate us with their ridiculous encouragement after the cheering shots.”
