MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Marquette’s first fashion show hits the runway this Saturday.

The event was created to give UP designers and students an opportunity to showcase their talents. According to Pearl Ann Rose McConnell, director of the Marquette Fashion Show, the main goal is to give young people hoping to enter the fashion industry the experience they need.

“I love bringing people together and learning things that can take them somewhere else in the world,” McConnell said. “Go to New York Fashion Week next. Go to LA Fashion Week, who knows. Just take the experience somewhere else and I want to see people happy.”

McConnell expects the show to sell out to more than 200 guests and 40 vendors. Among the designers mentioned is McConnell’s friend Vera Gould.

“I’m so honored that she gave me this experience,” Gold said. “We are friends who paint together and she gave me the opportunity to be at her show and express and promote my art.”

In addition to supporting artists and designers, the show also benefits the non-profit area. Sisu Dark Horse is dedicated to helping marginalized children achieve success in combat sports such as Muay Thai and wrestling. President Jovan Mercado Sports teach life skills.

“If you lose a fight, it’s because of the effort you put in,” Mercado said. “There’s accountability because if you don’t show up, your teammates aren’t getting better, but ultimately it comes down to you. Just like if you get fired in life, no matter the excuse, it’s your fault.

At the next marquee fashion show, you want to put on a spring and summer show. They are also working on a fashion magazine that will be released soon.
