GRAND RAPIDS, MI – With COVID-19 testing now widely available throughout the city, Spectrum Health will close its drive-through testing site in Grand Rapids on Friday, July 29, hospital officials announced this week.

The drive-up site at 1300 Michigan St. first opened in March 2020 and has since conducted nearly half a million COVID-19 tests, according to a Spectrum Health news release Wednesday.

“When I think of how quickly our teams came together to establish this site and others throughout Spectrum Health in the early days of the pandemic, I am filled with pride,” said Chad Tuttle, senior vice president of hospital and post-acute operations for BHSH Spectrum Health West Michigan, in a prepared statement. “It is yet another example of our staff working tirelessly and selflessly in the face of an overwhelming crisis.”

The site will close on Friday, and hospital staff will dismantle the site on Monday, Aug. 1. The remaining medical and non-medical supplies will be distributed throughout Spectrum Health, according to the release.

Hospital officials cited the wide availability of testing sites in the city that were not available when the drive-through site first opened. Testing options for people without symptoms now include local pharmacies such as Meijer, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid, home testing and other testing locations in Michigan, according to the release.

Patients can still get tested for COVID-19 at Spectrum Health by making an appointment with their provider.

The drive-through site in Grand Rapids also served as one of the first drive-through COVID-19 vaccination sites when vaccines became available, according to the release. Spectrum Health will still offer COVID-19 vaccinations, which patients can receive by scheduling an appointment through their provider.
