The Yakima Health District Board of Health will interview seven applicants for three open interviews.
Three seats on the board will open in December. Two are appointed to elected officials and one is a citizen representative position. They were held by Yakima Councilwoman Patricia Byers, Toppenish Councilwoman Nyla Prieto-Duval and Dr. Sean Cleary.
Prieto-Duvall and Cleary chose not to reapply. At a board meeting on Wednesday, both expressed gratitude for their experience as board members. Prieto-Duval said the 8:30-11 a.m. board meeting time was difficult for her schedule.
Cleary lamented the lack of in-person meetings and said he would reapply if in-person health board meetings were reinstated.
Applicants for the elected official positions are Baier, Teton Councilwoman Lupita Carrillo and Yakima Mayor Janice Decio.
Dr. Sarah Kate, Dr. Douglas Shearer, Deborah Brown and Eddie Dibble applied for the position of Citizen Representative.
The Board of Health oversees the operations of the Health District and makes public health decisions on behalf of the residents of Yakima County. More seats were added this year to comply with a state law designed to limit political influence on public health decisions. Volunteer positions are unpaid.
The board will interview applicants at a special meeting on October 20. The board will forward their selection to the Yakima County Commissioners, who will make the final selection.
The board has 10 members – three county commissioners, two elected officials, four citizen representatives and one Yakama Nation representative not appointed by the American Indian Health Commission.
