A ‘perfect fit’ for a fashion influencer

The lucky break that Class of 2025 Sean Grady needed to launch his career as a fashion influencer was an email from his marketing professor.

“I thought it was a perfect fit,” says the marketing expert. “I love people and I love fashion.”

Hired as an intern at the marketing agency Riddle & Bloom, Grady was hired by J. He was assigned to work as a student brand ambassador for Madewell, a popular clothing brand specializing in denim products under Crew Group.

Grady was responsible for increasing awareness of the Madewell brand on the Suffolk campus and on social media during the spring semester. He’s been so successful that he was recently hired by online shopping giant Amazon in the same role, starting this fall.

“Sean understands what it takes to promote and sell a product,” says marketing professor Bob Cargill, who sent the email about Madewell’s internship to students in his Principles of Marketing course. It is likable, approachable and persuasive, and people buy products and services from people they like and trust. He knows how to get attention for the right reasons.

Grady said he used many of Cargill’s strategies in his marketing plan, including the importance of the four P’s: product, place, price and promotion. “Professor Cargill has helped me throughout my internship,” he said.

As a Madewell ambassador, Grady strives to “meet as many people as possible—anywhere, anytime—to promote the brand,” whether it’s through one-on-one conversations, classroom announcements, playing pick-up basketball or visiting student-run organizations. He also used his personal Instagram account to post photos of himself wearing Madewell gear to his followers along with price discounts.
