TRIPLER ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, HI – Army Lt. Gen. Ronald Pleas, director of the Defense Health Agency (DHA), hosted a ceremony Sept. 27 officially establishing the DHA Region Indo-Pacific (DHAR-IP).
Headed by Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Heck, director of DHAR-IP, the region currently oversees health care delivery to more than 234,000 beneficiaries enrolled in military medical facilities (MTFs) in Hawaii, Guam, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Consisting of 45 medical facilities, the region provides health care to Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force service members, their families and military retirees across nearly half of the Earth’s surface.
“Each military medical facility has a unique mission, a unique geography and a unique history,” Place said. “We know that healthcare is a local experience, and what we aim to achieve through this transition is a consistently superior approach to our patients and our healthcare team wherever they serve.”
Following the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017, the Defense Health Agency assumed responsibility for the administration and management of MTFs, including clinics and hospitals. By establishing DHAR-IP, DHA and military service branches, they can tailor healthcare delivery and medical preparedness to the needs of increasingly critical strategic locations.
“We have to achieve the best outcomes for the patients we serve, and we have to maintain a ready medical force and a medically ready force,” he explained. “A medically ready force means we must ensure that everyone in uniform is healthy and protected from potential medical threats. A ready medical force means we must support health professionals through training, education, and clinical facilities where our medical teams can acquire the skills necessary to serve the men and women in uniform, their families, and those who have served our country. the past”
“The purpose of DHAR-IP is to support our military service members and their families,” said Heck. “As we move from transition to facilitation, we must remember that our MTFs are operational readiness platforms. We are charged not only with providing the highest quality health care to our users, but also with meeting the requirements of combatant commanders.”
