SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Ochsner LSU Health hosted a free community health fair on Saturday, October 1st.

Heart Health Day gave participants the opportunity to get a free health screening. Group exercises were conducted and experts educated people about the importance of healthy habits.

“In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds. And every 30 seconds, someone dies from cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Paari Dominic, Director of Cardio-Electrical Physiology.

Because of this fact, Dominic felt it was important to bring awareness to heart health.

“Specifically, Louisiana is number five in the top five states for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality,” Dominik said.

In addition, one in five adults who have suffered a heart attack show no early warning signs.

“My mother died of a massive heart attack. So, I’m here to make sure it’s in my heart to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again,” said Ida Lindsay.

She said she feels like Heart Health Day is a good opportunity to make sure her health is on the line.

Students helping with the event also say they benefited from the experience.

“Here, it gives me time to interact with our patient population and learn more about the different health tests they do, and it gives me time to see what it’s like to have undiagnosed high blood pressure,” said student Maggie Boston. .

Many participants say they are pleased with how accessible the event is.

Dr. Maaman Venkataraj Many people avoid health check-ups because they are not properly insured.
