PLYMOUTH, Ind. (WNDU) – Plymouth’s historic REES Theater is open after five years of renovations.

The theater in downtown Plymouth has been closed since 2009, when the theater turned off the lights for good. However, community interest stemming from the Lincoln Middle School project was the impetus for the renewal.

In celebration of the grand re-opening, a world record trumpet competition was held at River Park Square on Saturday.

While they fell short of the record, that minor setback wasn’t enough to stop the music.

Plymouth native and accomplished trumpeter Denver Bierman and the Mile High Orchestra are leading 53 local trumpeters in a performance of some of his songs before heading to Reese for his first concert in the newly renovated theater.

Denver Biermann and the Mile High Orchestra were finalists on the TV show “America’s Next Great Band.”

After wowing the crowd with Biermann’s “My Home Town” set for Plymouth, Biermann was presented with a key to the city.

The REES Theater has transformed its stage to honor one of Biermann’s early inspirations, longtime Plymouth choirmaster Bob Pickel.

“The grand re-opening event will be a concert with Denver Biermann and the Mile High Orchestra on the Bob Pickel Performing Arts Stage,” said Jim Hartung, REES Theater Entertainment Chairman. “Bob Pickel was a high school choir and band teacher, and he was very influential. He recently passed away after retirement, and we couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate this event than to name the stage after him, and Bob Pickel is the performing arts stage.”

There are many more events for REES for the Stars to reopen next week.

The community is welcome to tour the newly renovated Race Theater on Sunday, October 2nd from 12-3pm.

International acoustic guitarist Pierre Bensousa plays Sundays from 7-9 pm.

On Tuesday, October 4, from 7-9pm, REES will hold whiskey, art and trial tidbits to share the history of the theater and how the project came to be.

Three Improv Soldiers will be at the REES Theater on Thursday, October 6th, 7-9 pm.

REES will showcase its many uses on Saturday, October 8 from 1-3pm as it’s Children’s Movie Day, and the theater will feature Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory offering chocolate candy for children.
