Liz presented at Global Fashion Collective, Milan Fashion Week, September 2022
The Global Fashion Collection (GFC) presented at Milan Fashion Week for the first time this autumn. Headed by Jamal Abdurrahman, director of Vancouver Fashion Week, the second largest fashion week in North America, the GFC has quickly become the premier showcase for emerging talent from around the world, hosting runway shows in various fashion capitals. The creative firm plans to add shows in London and Mexico in 2023 and will exhibit at New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and Tokyo Fashion Week.
Ten international designers were in the spotlight during a special Spring/Summer 2023 runway event during Milan Fashion Week in a rugged industrial space near the Prada Foundation. For this premiere, Milan designers Marisa P.
Blutamburin presents a stellar unisex collection that perfectly blends western silhouettes with oriental details. South Korean designer Bo Min Kim has been in the industry for over two decades creating amazing and imaginative clothes. This collection was inspired by seeing the constellations in the sky after attending a Catholic church service. Passionate about “zero waste clothing”, her pieces are created using naturally dyed and sustainable fabrics such as 100% silk. One standout look is a sweeping cream-colored gown with a slit collar and puff sleeves, and a hand-painted portrait of Venus from “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli on the side. This collection features 3D flowers, beaded lace, sheer fabrics and details on the garment. Another highlight is a long open coat with an oversized collar and wide-leg cream pants with a thick waist.
Fawn Studio showcases “Wildflowers” inspired by fields of flowers and sunsets. This Calgary-based label was founded by Marisa P. after graduating from London College of Fashion in 2017. Clark was invented. Her brand is feminine and playful, often featuring bright earthy tones and beautiful prints. This collection was no exception, with dresses in apricot orange, green and yellow. Ready-to-wear looks include cropped polo shirts, cardigans and maxi dresses. Clark also showcased three luxurious handmade crochet pieces created with hand-spun and natural wool from Mexico. The final look consisted of a burnt orange bra and panty under a wildflower crochet dress and took 40 hours to create.
Lisle resident Lisle Hwang presented a stunning, colorful collection rich with references to her South Korean heritage. Her brand aims to work. Hanbok (Korean traditional dress) more wearable and trendy. This collection was inspired by festivals and the festive mood they create. Blending traditional Korean clothing with streetwear style, Lee’s attention to detail is evident. The first look featured a cropped white shirt with distressed jeans, stunning green mesh gloves and bright green boots. Many garments also feature brightly colored hanbok styles called “norigae”.
CEDIM School of Design was founded by Alejandro García Villarreal and has specialized in art, design, creativity and business in Mexico since 1978. Seven students from CEDIM were selected to make three appearances each, at the GFC in Milan. All of the designs were well thought out – a very impressive debut on the runway. Lorena de la Garza’s futuristic and colorful clothes are cut and professionally arranged into a Mondrian-esque masterpiece. Valeria San Miguel presents a collection “Psychedelic Witch” that shows her love of color and print. Her dresses were dressed in baby blue, orange and mustard yellow, with ruffles and elegant frills. Alessandra Garfias uses 3D-printing and laser-cutting technology for her designs. Her pieces were inspired by nature and came in beautiful jewel tones and featured elegant asymmetric sleeves. Katya Razan’s collection uses natural dyes to create beautiful shades of peach, robin’s egg and pastel yellow for her three monochromatic looks. Her outfits had distressed streetwear twists and ribbon-tied elements. Karime Payan used her clothes to comment on the problem of forced disappearances in Mexico. Her pieces feature lost-person faces with asymmetrical capes, embroidered at the collar, hanging from chains and cascading from the skirt. Paulina Villarreal Martínez presents “Quimera”, a masterpiece inspired by Frida Kahlo and Thierry Mugler. Her simple and elegant dresses are adorned with beautiful floral headpieces. Norma Kota’s designs are inspired by social problems of marginalization. She presents three all-black experimental punk looks that play with asymmetry and oversized silhouettes.
The next World Fashion Collection editions are Paris Fashion Week, October 1 2022, London Fashion Week, February 2023 and Tokyo Fashion Week, March 2023.
