The Real Real fashion head wears this week

“this is [what I wear] When I have a presentation, I want it to feel super professional. It’s like a power suit because it’s actually a belted dress. The first time I wore it, my sister said I looked like Carmen San Diego. It was the best compliment. I really feel like I’m in power mode at work. These are ancient boots. I think everyone should own a pair of tall boots, especially when transitioning between seasons. They’re the perfect solution for that awkward phase between summer and fall when you don’t want to wear tights with skirts or dresses. I wear them all the time.

“These are of course John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection. I bought them for a holiday at work. I wanted something fun, but in an unexpected way – not traditional sequins. Now, I honestly find myself wearing them to the coffee shop all the time. I get a lot of compliments on them, but it’s those compliments where you never know if someone will really like them, like, ‘Wow, look at your pants.’

“They’re Simon Miller jeans I bought a while ago. They are my pair. Surprisingly they were much lower than I first thought but the tide turned that way so it was perfect. Their image is very good. Then, the top is Rosy Assulin. I don’t know if it was meant to be a vest, but I wore it like a robe over a silk top. Then in the summer, I can just wear it without sleeves. The shoes are Studio Pollini Whiches that my neighbor, maybe five years older, wore in high school in the 2000s. She was cleaning her closet, and I was like, ‘Wait, wait.’ I want those.’ Green is everything. The fact that they were sweaters – I was really into them.

“Actually, I bought that [Bottega Veneta bag] As Daniel Lee came. of [intrecciato weave] It became a trend again, and I was like, ‘Wait a minute. We have such an amazing product on Reel Reel.’ That’s right. Old I originally bought the Bottega to have a tote bag for work, but I’ve started taking it when I’m out and about.

“Honestly, if I look at my obsession with Real Real, maybe 50% of them are Missoni now. I know mainstream market wise, Missoni isn’t necessarily making a huge comeback, but something is coming and when it does I have all the product – already in the closet. So, that’s a Missoni top, a Helmut Lang leather mini dress. Mini skirts are making a comeback, but the last time I wore a mini skirt, it was all about jeans. I thought, ‘I’m going to step up and go to the skin.’ I was very happy with this choice.

“I don’t have a uniform, but I do have a style routine or standard. I get into costumes and repeat over and over again. I have worn this dress over and over again. I used to go down to the beach and hang out with some friends, but I’ve been wearing this every time I’ve gone hiking this summer. I like it, so I’m going to enjoy it. Then the Miu Miu bag which I also got from Real Real. When I saw it, I knew it was the perfect combination of everything I wanted in a bag: the crescent shape, the metallic texture.

“The shoes are Nanette Lepore. Back in my early days as a fashion editor, that show was part of my beat. While I was there I was covering Swim Week in Miami. lucky you. We were having lunch with Nanette because she was hosting a handful of organizers and she gifted us these shoes. To be honest, they were in my closet and I forgot about them. Recently, I looked for flat shapes and realized, ‘Wait, I have flat shapes.’ Every now and then, you’re happy to have something.”

“This is a vintage Celine dress. I think Michael [Kors era]. It was a locked height and my colleague said to me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to have this. So are you.’ I bought it. Especially when shopping secondhand and vintage, if you fall in love with something, don’t wait for an opportunity to wear it. Buy it—and I’m so glad I did, because there were so many opportunities to wear it this season. You want something that has a different feel, that not everyone will have, but that still feels like you, and that you feel comfortable stepping into. This was the perfect outfit. This type of bag was the perfect neutral that I could wear every day, but also dressy. This here is a head-to-toe ode to the Celine of old.

“I was wearing a charm bracelet. All the jewelry I wear is minimal. I usually wear the same thing every day, but it’s all anonymous. This bracelet, in particular, belongs to my mother. She was a little girl. Her aunt used to give her different charms for different occasions. I also borrowed it from her a while ago.”

I know it’s really hard to distill a sense of style into a few words, but can it describe what you’re interested in when adding things to your collection?

“I’ve thought about it—and it’s tricky—but I’ve come up with the old twist. Or it’s a classic look like a simple pair of pants or a simple top, but there’s something fun or unexpected about the print or color. Or, if it’s an image that feels more sculptural or architectural, I usually go with a more neutral color palette. I always like to have some kind of unexpected element, but in the end, a familiar approach.

To complement that, tell us a little about your lifestyle and what you like to wear on a regular basis.

“On the East Coast TRR branch we are currently working remotely, but we have occasions where we have work arrangements. That definitely makes me want to wear it and [skew] He was more professional than I was before we left the office. I have a newfound interest in wearing heels, something that feels a little more structured than I have in the past. There are definitely retired pieces in the wardrobe that I brought back. But then I was dressing for ‘everyday’. One day I was wearing giraffe pants to get coffee before work, and I was like, ‘This is fun.’ Everybody was in sweats, but I’m like, ‘You know what? I want to get dressed to go get matcha.’

“This summer I found myself looking for more event-wear options than last. I think I’ve finally retired from shopping for anything casual or loungewear-like to dress up and push myself in my personal style. But while my style has evolved with me, it’s still there.” [an element] It’s true for me, so it’s interesting to see that. [process]He said.

As someone who eats, sleeps, breathes fashion in a professional sense, I’m sure your job also includes charting trends, keeping track of what’s popular and how the cycle moves. How do you differentiate between that and your personal style? Do you find yourself following those trends, or do you want to stay on a slower pace?

“It definitely still plays into my style. It’s very much part of my job, but why I think it’s part of my job is because it makes me happy, like the recent Copernicus show in Fall ’22. I looked at him and my heart skipped a beat. It’s not couture or anything, but I instantly feel like, ‘I want those miniskirts and those knee-high socks.’ There are elements that, yes, I want to incorporate, but at this point in my life, I know what images compliment my body and make me feel more confident. It’s about taking those trends and translating them into something that works for me.”

Like to road test a trend you’re working with in a work setting?

“I definitely like to do that, especially if I’m on set and have a chance to test it. As our office is above the TRR SoHo store, I ask the vendors who ship the product to the store to ship some items there. I can try before someone buys. Sometimes, there are things that I’m excited about, and then they spin and I’m like, ‘I really don’t feel that good about this. It’s for someone else, but not me.

Do you wear all vintage or do you have a mix of pre-owned or current pieces?

“Basically, it’s all real life. I guess the big perks of the job, but also the downside, is seeing the product all day, every day. My colleagues and I are bad influences on each other. We talk to each other. By nature, I have my hands in inventory all day, how do I know the primary market?” I forget to shop. My way is organic so I don’t even know what to look for. Something pops up and I see, ‘I need that’ or something, obsess and hunt them down.

Then the final piece of the puzzle, what’s your everyday hair and makeup look like?

“Very easy. Every day when I go to the office, I blow dry my hair, straighten it, then curl it. Now, I’ve decided to embrace my natural texture, which I find a little wavy – it won’t stick straight without straightening it. It’s amazing to see that. I use Calia shampoo and conditioner and then Crown Affair Hair Oil. I put a little on the ends of my hair to tame frizz.

“Then for skincare/makeup, I used La Roche-Posay eye cream. Then Merit makeup. I was on that kick, trying everything. If I’m going out I’ll put on eyeshadow and mascara for prep, but otherwise it’s pretty simple.
