Howard models take on New York Fashion Week – Hilltop

For a while, Howard was known for modeling soldiers and models. Each modeling team takes time to shape the model to prepare for big stages like New York Fashion Week (NYFW). This past season, two models from Howard had the opportunity to participate in one of the most important fashion events of the year.

NYFW is a spontaneous and exciting time in New York City. Designers from all over the world will be showing and selling pieces from their collections throughout the year.

AJ Taylor is a civil engineering major from Miami, Florida, and with little experience at first, he walked in his first NYFW show last fall. Taylor modeled for the brand A fairy tale ending based in Atlanta, Georgia. He believes Mecca’s models prepared him for this opportunity.

“[Models of the Mecca] Taylor gave me all the tools I needed to walk for NYFW and the attitude and confidence to shine at NYFW,” he said. “They taught me sound techniques and runway etiquette to be professionally well-rounded and ready for anything.”

Taylor remembers seeing a call for a NYFW show, not thinking he had enough experience, he applied anyway. He recalled the feeling of being invited to walk in the show.

“When I found out I was selected, I was thrilled and honored to be able to jump in early,” AJ said.

Howard model AJ Taylor isn’t the only one who got the chance to walk this year’s festivities. Nyasia Ashford is a junior fashion design major and psychology major from New Jersey. She had the opportunity to represent Friskmegood, a featured designer on HBO Max’s “The Hype.”

Friskmegood is a sustainable streetwear fashion brand known for its unique pieces and diverse models. Ashford applied through Catting’s website and was thrilled when she got a call.

“I’m sure I cried tears of joy, this was my first time walking in NYFW, and that’s been a goal since I put on my first pair of stilettos,” Ashford enthuses. “It still feels like a dream and a confidence.”

Ashford is part of Modeling Army ELITE, another one of four modeling armies on Howard’s campus. ELITE is known for its editorial shoots and collaborations with big brands. It is one brand that the soldiers are sponsored by. IVY Park Ashford was one of the models featured in their school’s girl campaign. She believes her modeling agency set her up for a photo shoot.

“Howard taught me how to work successfully in stressful environments,” says Ashford. “He taught me to always stay on my toes and be ready for change at any time.”

Howard is often considered a hub for innovation and new, up-and-coming talent. Both models were inexperienced, but they were willing to try, and their attempts were fruitful. AJ has the perfect advice for those looking to break into the industry early.

“Get out there, learn vocal techniques and practice as much as you can before you apply so you’re ready to step up anywhere and anytime,” AJ said excitedly. “Apply for what you get and see what you hear, and always do your research on the company you’re applying to.”
