Creating a strong, diverse and resilient behavioral health workforce in Massachusetts

The behavioral health workforce in Massachusetts is in crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased behavioral health issues and demand for services, exposing and exacerbating vulnerabilities in Massachusetts’ behavioral health workforce and delivery system. At the same time, health care, including behavioral health care, is among the industries hardest hit by the Great Layoffs, exacerbating labor shortages that predate the pandemic. These dynamics fuel an urgent call to action to develop and support a workforce that meets the critical behavioral health care needs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.




In the Massachusetts Foundation’s Blue Cross Blue Shield report, Manat Health outlined concrete recommendations to expand Massachusetts’ behavioral health workforce, increase its diversity, increase its capacity to meet the needs of all people in the commonwealth, and strengthen its resilience.
