Pin Belt, Miss. (WDAM) – At Mayo Clinic Health SystemAs many as 44% of college students report experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety.

The month of October is dedicated to bringing awareness to depression and mental health issues to help those looking for resources and help as college students.

“In order to get a 4.0 prospect at a four-year university, you have to get on the president’s list. You have to be more involved,” said University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Senior and Student Government Association Vice President Christopher Lee.

For many students like Lee, college can be overwhelming and some students struggle with their mental health from dealing with daily classes, homework, and post-college plans.

USM senior Ashley Grantham said, “I’m getting ready for (after college) because I’m going straight to the Ph.D. “So, ‘Oh my! How can I stand out as much as possible?’ And it’s so important to sound as good as you can and make that first impression. Therefore, it is as if you have to plan ahead in advance; It really weighs you down a bit.

Dr. Christina Williams, a psychologist at Pine Grove Mental Health Services, said students struggling with mental health may experience symptoms such as changes in appetite or sleep, withdrawal from family and friends, and rejection of new opportunities.

“First of all, if you have a friend or family member to talk to, to verbalize these things, it’s such a relief,” Williams said. “And to have someone else sit with you in this feeling, not to fix it, but to listen and empathize, is huge.”

Williams also says there are more online support groups for mental health than ever before for anyone looking to get help.

“It’s really important to focus on what you need to gain in life and how you can get back to square one,” Lee said. “Do whatever you have to do. You don’t have to be perfect all the time, and not being okay is perfect.”

The new 24-hour mental health hotline is 988.
