BETTINGDORF, Iowa (KWQC) – According to Unity Point Health, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

“Early detection of breast cancer can save lives for individuals,” said Sara Urmansky, manager of Quad Cities Imaging Services. “It’s never too early to start a conversation with your primary care provider about your breast cancer risk and implications and what breast cancer health should start for you.”

To help increase access to mammograms, the Trinity Health Foundation’s Breast Patient Assistance Fund provides free breast cancer screenings for uninsured or underinsured patients.

“The average cost for women really varies depending on the first mammogram, and if it detects something else that needs to be looked at, an additional procedure,” said Trinity Health Foundation President Mary McCumber-Schmidt. On average, it can range from $100 to $1,000 for that ongoing preventative care. For any woman or anyone seeking a mammogram, it is important to wait as a precaution and wait until you feel something different or see something abnormal.

Funding also covers ultrasound and core biopsy if recommended.

“A mammogram takes about 30 minutes. The compression part, which is often the scariest part for women, lasts about five to 30 seconds,” Urmansky said.

A community comes together to help each other.

“Many times women who have had cancer or their families donate to the Trinity to help other women get the care they need for preventative measures like mammograms and then any ultrasounds or biopsies afterward. Mammograms,” McCumber-Schmidt said. “I appreciate the community and the individuals in our country who have taken the initiative to make sure women have mammograms.”

Free screenings are offered year-round, and patients should first request a screening mammogram from their primary care provider. Then patients should call (309) 779-5870.
