Bumpers College students are invited to a pre-opening event on apparel business and product development at Fashion America: Grit to Glamour, a temporary exhibition on fashion at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
More than 50 apparel merchandising and product development students were recently treated to a pre-opening lecture at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s temporary exhibition on fashion.
The exhibition Fashion America: Grit to Glamor is a collaboration between fashion design and curator Michelle Tolini Finamore: pop artist, entrepreneur and creative director Victoria Modesta; and artist Virgil Ortiz.
Apparel Merchandising and Product Development students, who are members of the new Fashion and Apparel Board on campus, learned about the exhibit’s themes, how the collection of works was assembled, and what American fashion is all about. And his contributions reflect the spirit of American art on the national and world stages.
The exhibit features cowboy boots, swimwear, sneakers, Hollywood gowns, denim jeans, zoot suits and more. Fashion America: Grit to charm Crystal Bridges is the first exhibition dedicated to fashion, and it showcases American fashion as a powerful symbol of global visual culture through movies, television, red carpets and social media. From gowns worn by First Ladies to artistically designed garments to iconic fashion seasons that define generations, Fashion America conveys unique American creative expressions, focusing on and highlighting the compelling stories of both designers and wearers of opportunity and self-invention. The voices of people often left out of mainstream fashion narratives.
The Fashion and Apparel Board RSO has 144 members, 53 of whom are present at the inaugural exhibition. Morgan Richards is the president; Haylea Naylor, secretary; and Victoria Gibbs, treasurer. Instructors Lance Cheramie and Stephanie Hubert are advisors.
The Apparel Marketing and Product Development program is part of the School of Human Environmental Sciences in the Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences.
