BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – One of the most common arguments is about money and we are all spending too much these days. Inflation is affecting some people’s well-being and flexibility at home.

Dealing with and dealing with financial issues can be stressful, especially right now, and how most people deal with everything is the opposite of what they should.

“When people experience high levels of stress, they stop doing the things that help them cope with the stress,” said Larry Devers, CEO of the company. Family Counseling Services of West Alabama. “Because of the stress, we start making bad choices and that makes it worse.”

A few examples he gives are when people give up on healthy eating, exercise, routine, or visiting friends and family. Divers say people should follow these good habits and be careful about the choices they make.

Financial stress can be a tipping point for some people these days due to inflation, causing more strain in some families.

“Our financial stress reveals that we don’t spend a lot of time together, that we don’t know how to communicate our feelings to each other,” Devers says. “When you have a lot of financial stress and you have more powerful conversations, maybe even more difficult conversations, even hurtful conversations … it’s a lack of communication skills that comes to the fore.”

Cultivating those skills can reduce the stress of getting the ‘money talks’ needed, Deavers says.

His biggest piece of advice is not just to hear, but to learn to really listen.

“If we can have an attitude of listening and trying to understand where they’re coming from, why might they feel that way,” he explains. If we can get that person where they are, they often melt our defenses.

Even if divers are under financial stress, it’s important to focus on your health and well-being, so keep exercising, getting enough sleep, and connecting with friends and family.
