FlorenceA.M – Jermichael Wright is a tattoo artist and owner of GBMS Tattoo Shop. His work was featured in his winning Australian Fashion Week collection.
Years earlier in New York, Wright had designed a jacket for up-and-coming Australian designer Samantha St. James. She asked Wright to make a jacket for her and used his piece in her catalog for the Australian Fashion Week competition.
“She contacted me after she won and told me she used my design in her show,” Wright said. “It’s really cool to see the works from all those years ago come back and be seen in the light.”
James was given a photo shoot in an Australian magazine featuring her collection and Wright’s clothes were also featured. Wright said James was getting calls for collaborations from Gucci and was surprised that something like this happened to his clothes. He said the sky is the limit.
Wright says his artwork is based on positivity and self-expression. The artwork is often based around the three monkey mantras: see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil. He puts a spin on each garment based on mantras.
Designing clothes was Wright’s first love. He designed clothes before he thought of becoming a tattoo artist. When he was still a little boy, his mother created a barn for him to make clothes because he was doing a lot of art work at home.
“She built the barn in the backyard for me to express myself and be creative freely,” Wright said. Even before I thought about tattoos, I was doing art on clothes, shoes, jeans and jackets.
Wright said his neighbors, friends and acquaintances often wear the clothes he makes. That passion of a young boy never stopped and only grew. Wright says he took a brief hiatus as he focused on tattooing, but the recent spotlight on his talent has prompted him to return to clothing design.
Wright’s mother is one of his biggest cheerleaders and always told him that his talent would make him a star, but Wright didn’t believe it, until now. “She always told me to do what I was doing,” he said. “She always saw the vision.”
Wright’s artwork is different, and doesn’t work in lines. He is an out-of-the-box innovator. He frees his hands and lets his creativity take over without thinking too much. He believes that this is what makes him successful.
“From making clothes to tattooing, I don’t follow a reference,” Wright said. “In my previous tattoo shop, they called me a dangerous tattoo artist because I was inspired and the tattoo had to be whatever it was.”
It’s how Wright creates and lives freely and without restrictions. He is a self-described free spirit and encourages others not to be limited by other people’s opinions and to be their true selves.
Art lives in Wright and is always tattooing, painting the house, or tinkering with the cars. His tattoo shop GBMS (God Bless My Success) takes up a lot of Wright’s time and his brother encourages him not to forget about clothing design. He says his brother’s advice and Australian Fashion Week highlight is a sign not to ignore his talent and to use what he has.
Wright says he made himself rich and created a brand called Rich of Art because he is rich in soul.
“I’m rich because I’m happy,” Wright said. “It’s not about how much money I make. It’s freedom and being able to live my life and do what I love.
To be rich is to be healthy and happy, he said. Wright says he has millionaire friends and people who have met with great wealth, but he has yet to meet someone as happy or satisfied with life as he is.
“They’re not nearly as happy as I am,” Wright said. But they have the money. It’s about waking up early to face the day and if you don’t feel like it, keep looking.
For the past 13 years, Wright has been able to live a free life as his art allows him to travel and tattoo various people, some of them famous, designing for people and allowing him to do what he loves.
“I make my own schedule and provide for my family,” Wright said. “I spend as much time as I want with my son and these things make me rich.”
Wright and his younger brother are both artists and have a close relationship. They encourage each other to create art and be the best person they can be. It was Wright’s brother who encouraged him to take up tattooing and pursue his talent for designing clothes.
“My brother always told me that you can’t stop doing what you start doing,” Wright said. “And Samantha believing in the piece I did, it was a sign for me to get back into it.”
“My brother is one of my biggest influences when it comes to art,” he said.
“He was always encouraging me,” Wright said. When the TV show “The Color Black” aired, he explained to the universe that I could do something like this.
His brother soon discovered that Wright had started tattooing and opened a shop. The two hope to create art together that will last a lifetime. Although they are two years apart, they call each other “twins”.
Wright hopes his art can inspire the community and young people to be themselves. He’s an AAU basketball coach, and the kids are always fascinated by his anime-themed cars and creative outfits. He prides himself on pushing the younger generation to beat their own drum against the status quo.
“I want kids to know there’s money in the arts,” Wright said. “You can make a life out of it, and I want it to be an example of my store and the way I live my life.”
God bless my success is the tattoo shop and the other brand name. He said that he never thought that he would be able to make a living out of his art, including God in his achievements. He has worked in a factory for 13 years and is now living his dream of living with his skills.
“I never thought I’d be doing artwork,” Wright said. “This still blows me away.”
Wright wants to be the brand everyone wears. He wants to walk down the street and see people wearing his brand GBMS.
“I know this will happen one day,” he said. Wright says everything takes time and he wants to carefully craft the vision of the clothing line before jumping in.
“I want to take my time and spend it the right way,” he said. “I don’t want it to be just a standard brand. I want it to be very creative and unique. The one who stands out in the crowd. Wright plans to go to Australia to collaborate with James on more clothing designs, but doesn’t plan to stay there. Wright wants the younger generation to know that you don’t have to leave Florence to be successful.
“You don’t have to go somewhere and uproot your whole life,” Wright said. “Everything I’ve done so far, I’ve done from here. My daughter is here, my family is here, and the kids I coach are here. I won’t go,” he said.
Wright has no formal art training and all his designs come from the heart and soul. He dreamed of going to college, especially Savannah Art and Design, but he didn’t have a class to attend, and he pushes his students to do well in school and teaches that talent is good, but if you don’t do it, I don’t have the package, you can’t go anywhere.
“I thought I’d get in because I’m good,” Wright said. “I needed more than talent and that’s what I teach the kids I coach.”
