We feel this is a case better avoided than sorry, and wiping a disk is definitely dangerous. Remember, not just organizations dealing with data center operations, but also those in the public sector, law enforcement agencies, ministries, and so on. All are said to be physically destroying the hardware for similar reasons.
On the other hand, news from the de-gearing of the data center spilled over into the mega-industry. Therefore, many experts are busy working here and argue that such practices should be avoided.
Eliminating endpoints and allowing them to be sold on secondary markets brings many benefits without risk. But the key point here is that it should be done correctly.
Remember, many of the materials needed to manufacture data centers are hard to come by. Likewise, some things like refurbished gear aren’t performing as well when compared to new gear. Not only was the company unable to properly erase the data stored on the disks, but those in charge were also able to sell the devices online. And they still have a lot of data stored in them. In the end, the result was terrible.
It triggered a scathing response from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. And nearly $35 million was sought as a settlement to end the legal battle.
