(CBS Detroit) – A 13-year-old boy from Metro Detroit has received an invitation to one of the most prestigious fashion events in America, New York Fashion Week 2023.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that most people don’t get,” said Langston Howard, founder and owner of The Top.

Langston’s mother, Jack Howard, said that as a child, Langston always enjoyed art. She says this is what helped spark his interest in fashion. In the year He mentioned that he wants to launch a clothing line in 2021 and make it a reality by March 2022.

“When he sets his mind to something, it’s 0-100,” Howard says.

“He went to work. He went to work on his own. He built the website. He found the shirt manufacturer. He set up a way to do all the shipping, and then he started The Top,” Howard said.

Howard Langston says networking was critical in helping him find opportunities to grow his brand. Alyse Dixon, chief program officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Michigan, said the organization has a fashion “industry club” program that helps youth market, network and become entrepreneurs.

Langston participated, having the opportunity to learn from mentors who shared decades of experience with young entrepreneurs like Langston to help grow his brand.

“We believe that everything we do with youth should ensure that they have the opportunity to do better than their parents and their ancestors who came before them,” Dixon said.

Through these networking opportunities, Langston has had the opportunity to network the brand at special events like the Detroit Auto Show and even showcase it to people like Rapper Big Sean.

“The main goal of The Top is just to inspire people during the day, because that’s what the world needs right now after COVID and the pandemic. That’s how we can get as much positive energy as we need,” Langston said.
