Minnetonka, Minn. –(Business Wire— UnitedHealth Foundation, a charitable arm of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), is making a $3 million commitment in partnership with ActiveMind, a nonprofit organization at the forefront of promoting mental health awareness and education for youth.
With 19 years of impact and a presence on more than 1,000 campuses, schools, communities and workplaces nationwide, Active Minds is reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, creating communities of support and saving lives. This funding will allow the organization to launch a pilot program in 50 school districts across Minnesota, North Carolina and Florida to better serve youth mental health at the middle school level.
This new partnership will see key findings from the United Health Foundation 2022 US Health Standards Women’s and Children’s Health Report. The report, released today, shows a significant increase in youth mental health challenges:

Between 2017-2018 and 2020-2021, anxiety among children ages 3-17 increased 23 percent. In the year In 2020-2021, anxiety affected an estimated 5.6 million children ages 3-17 – an increase of more than 1 million children from 2017-2018.

Between 2017-2018 and 2020-2021, depression among children ages 3-17 increased by 27 percent. In the year In 2020-2021, depression affected an estimated 2.5 million children ages 3-17, an increase of more than half a million children from 2017-2018.

Between 2012-2014 and 2018-2020, the suicide rate among youth ages 15 to 19 increased 29 percent nationally.

Funding from UnitedHealth Foundation enables Active Minds to address these challenges. Based on Active Minds’ evidence-based approach to improving the mental health of college and high school students, the pilot program addresses middle school students’ social and emotional needs, improves mental health-related attitudes, reduces stigma, and increases student opportunity.
