Washington’s diplomatic community gathered on Wednesday to celebrate the first couple’s fashion and the designers they wear from around the world.
“What you wear is very important, it’s the first thing we see on a person, and it affects us. Jean du Plain, who was on the hosting committee for one of the fashion galas and wore a gorgeous white gown to the event, is either a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
“Especially in the world of diplomacy, it’s very important not to make a mistake in what you wear.”
Hosted by Indira Gumarova, wife of the Czech Ambassador to the United States, the non-profit group hosted Diplomacy and Fashion at the Conrad Hotel.
Guests can sip champagne and cocktails as they arrive and have their pictures taken in a small red carpet area or join a fashion exhibition of former and current first spouses from around the world.
Among the items are a Chanel dress by French First Lady Brigitte Macron, former First Lady Imelda Marcos of the Philippines and a dress by former First Lady Edith Wilson.
“It was a Herculean effort on her part to bring these clothes from all these different countries and governments,” Du Plain said of Gumarova.
After cocktail hour, guests were seated at tables around the runway, each carrying a gift bag filled with perfume and skin care products.
Dinner began with heirloom carrot soup while an opera singer performed two arias.
After the main course – pappardelle pasta with smoked tomato, mushroom and cashew ricotta; Or grilled Amish chicken or Wild Island salmon, both accompanied by russet potato fries and pickled summer squash—it was the main event, a fashion show featuring the work of designers who dressed their country’s first spouses.
The American designer who dressed former first lady Michelle Obama was Naeem Khan.
Other designers include South African designer Fred Iboka, who dressed South Africa’s first lady, Dr. Shepo Motepe. Qatari designer Haya Al Adsani, who dresses the former first lady of Qatar, Moza bint Nasser; Guatemalan designer Anita Lara and Czech designer Tatiana Kovašikova.
Gumarova, a non-designer who has advised Czech first ladies on how to dress for years, says it’s not her job to dress up other clients.
“This is very different, because you have to include not only the size or the style, but also the culture, the colors, the religion and what is appropriate and what is not. So all these rituals go together in one garment,” Gumarova said.
“It’s not typical for fashion or celebrities,” she added.
The event raised over $100,000 for Diplomacy and Fashion and supported undergraduate students in both fashion and diplomacy.
