Jonathan Pennix He believed in himself and patiently stayed through the recruitment process until the offer and the right path came.

So he told the Hokies coach after Virginia Tech offered an Appomattox (Va.) County athlete during a visit to campus last month. Brent Pr He was committed but wanted to wait until his 18th birthday to announce it.

That day was Thursday, and the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Pennix made his commitment official.

“Virginia Tech was always the school I wanted an offer from,” Penix said. “I always wanted to tell my kids that I had a full Ride scholarship to play football at Virginia Tech. Even if I didn’t go there, I always wanted to tell them about the offer from Virginia Tech.”

“I went to the camp with the old staff and I went on a game visit with the old staff. With the new staff, I was able to see both sides and with the new staff, it’s like a completely different thing.

“They took me on my game visit and coach Pryor’s office, and he said I got it. It wasn’t given to me.”

Pennix was recruited by schools to play cornerback and receiver. He said he likes the Hokies on offense, and he spent time talking to the receivers coach Fontel Mineral About his role(s) in the Hokies’ offense.

“They say I’m a natural with the ball in my hands, so I’m just thinking about playing the slot, getting some screens and getting the ball in my hands,” Penix said. “Coach Mims is very real with me. He said you don’t see my route running on film because I’m running a lot of crossing routes, on screens and short routes or opening the deep ball and using my speed.

“You don’t see a lot of ways I can get in and out of my breaks, and that’s where it comes into play. He told me to get into good things, get into my breaks and run. Good ways.”

However, what led Pennix to his decision was the general feeling he got from being around the program when he was on a video conference with all of the Virginia Tech commits.

“When (Pry) added me in there, I just felt at home,” Pennix said. “One day we met with Coach Pree and all the commitment was on the call and before we even started, Coach Pree introduced me to all the other jobs and that was more than a little bit. I didn’t expect to do that.

“I’ve been in camp with some of them so I know a lot of them and I know all those guys can ball, and they know I can ball. That’s why I’m so happy to be in this class. This is the class. I’m going to change things at Virginia Tech and I can’t wait to be a part of bringing back the old tech style.”

Pennix is the 10th in-state member of Virginia Tech’s Class of 2023, which has 19 players. It moves the Hokies from No. 42 to No. 39 and one spot to No. 8 in the ACC.
