The last time the Met Gala was not held on the first Monday of May was in 2018. It was in 2004. It has been held on that day of the week for years, ever since Anna Wintour took charge of the event. May” has become synonymous with Gala. Due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 Met Gala was held on the second Monday of September with the theme “In America: The Dictionary of Fashion” and the dress code “American Freedom”. The 2021 and 2022 galas were part of a two-part exhibition, which is why the 2022 theme is “In America.”
A few celebrities nailed the “Americana” theme. There were many ways for attendees to incorporate the dress code theme of “Fashion Dictionary” and “American Freedom.” However, many of the costumes seemed dull, out of place and had no regard for the theme.
Like many men at the Met Gala, Channing Tatum opted for a boring, traditional black suit. Similarly, Justin Bieber walked the carpet in a simple dress. It seems like every year at the Met Gala, when the gala can really take risks and make a splash, many of the male attendees play it safe. Although most of the men presented a mediocre look, there were a couple of good outfits – although they may not be very on theme. In particular, Lil Nas X wore three different Versace outfits on the carpet and his gold-clad look was definitely one of the most memorable of the night.
As for the looks on the theme, Gema Chan stole the night in her Prabal Gurung gown. She sported a black, sequined mini dress featuring a dragon and a long pastel green train. Appearances The first Chinese-American Hollywood star, Anna May Wong, is remembered for enduring years of prejudice and prejudice in the film industry. Wong is a true example of “American freedom” and has paved the way for Asian actresses in Hollywood, including Chan, which is why her look was thematic and a beautiful tribute.
Most of the outfits at the 2021 gala were off-theme, but that doesn’t mean they looked bad. Olivia Rodrigo made her Met Gala debut in a black lace Saint Laurent jumpsuit that was very punk rock. Billie Eilish looked stunning in her Oscar de la Renta gown featuring a 15-foot train. Kendall Jenner took inspiration from Audrey Hepburn, wearing a sheer, crystal-encrusted Givenchy gown for what might be one of her best Met looks to date.
All in all, “In America: The Fashion Dictionary” was not the most exciting Met Gala. Some of the issues may have stemmed from the fact that the gala was smaller than usual – but that doesn’t excuse many attendees’ lack of creativity in their looks and theme.
