Houghton, Mich. (WLUC) – The Michigan Tech football team picked up its second straight win over Parkside in 2-0 fashion Friday night at Kerley Stadium in Houghton.
Michigan Tech improves to 5-6-3 and 3-4-3 in GLIAC play as Parkside falls to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the loop.
“It’s very exciting to get two goals in the first place,” said head coach Bulut Ozturk. “Mia gave us the boost we needed and Ella showed the fierceness she talked about being in the top six.
“I am very happy to close out our team’s seventh season.”
The two goals were Mia van der Heide’s first of the season when she scored the game-winner in the 38th minute. In the 58th minute, defender Ella Roach scored her first goal for the black and gold.
Defensively, Gracie VanLangevelde secured her seventh shutout spot, thanks to her collective defensive play throughout the game.
When the two teams faced off against the Huskies, 2 shots went off the line and the Rangers met in the black and gold end zone.
Parkside scored the first down, but three minutes later the Huskies had the next four possessions. Anna Syracuse found the ball 10 yards from the Rangers net after Jordan Noble’s shot was blocked, Syracuse connected with the ball and hit the left post for the closest chance of the day less than sixteen minutes into the game.
After 10 minutes, Rangers had a chance of their own. A cross from the left saw Emily Mickelson hit the left post and curl her head into the box inches away to give Parkside a 1-0 lead.
Kiersen Korinek headed in Stephanie Yeager’s corner kick to give the Huskies two scoring chances in the first half.
The Stupid goalkeeper ended his scoring drought when he came in well outside the box and was met by Neve Badalou. The two collided with the ball and sent it further down the pitch, giving Mia van der Heijd a chance to hit the ball into the net from 30 yards out. His shot found the back of two Parkeed defenders before finding the right corner to make it 1-0 in the 38th minute.
The Huskies led 1-0 at halftime, scoring 11 shots and hitting 3 targets.
MTU’s offensive pressure continued after the break as Ella Roach converted a free kick from Casey Boniface. Boniface saved the penalty from the penalty spot and Roach tipped the ball to the left to make it 2-0.
Rangers had a chance to get on the board in the 71st free kick, but failed to do so when the ball went into midfield.
Michigan Tech scored 17 shots, six on target, and went 3-0 in corner kicks.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, welcoming Purdue Northwest to Kerley Stadium for a noon kickoff.
