Houghton, Mich – Michigan Tech’s 100-year hockey reunion concluded Saturday night with the alumni game at the John McInnes Student Ice Arena. Black and Cream were tied 10-10 before Cream scored the game-tying score in the final seconds after emptying the entire bench for extra attackers.
Michigan Tech All-American and current Dallas Stars forward Tanner Caro (2011-15) scored early and often, scoring four goals in the game for the team in a 100-year-old cream uniform.
“It was a lot of fun,” Queiro said. “The Blacks picked it up in the second half and we had to try to match that energy. We knew we had to get that tricky goal, even though it took more physicality.
“Being on the ice with these legends that I heard play as a young Huskies fan growing up in the area was pretty special.”
The best player to ever don a Michigan Tech jersey was Mike Zook (1972-76) on the Black team.
“It was great to be back here this weekend,” said Zook, a two-time All-American. “I struggled to stay off the road tonight but I survived that’s the main thing.
“Playing at Michigan Tech was my best four years of hockey and the best four years of my life. I owe a lot to Rick Eu, John McNeese and Glenn Weller. We had a great time here, and it’s great to be back. .”
Jamie Ramm (1990-94) was a two-time All-American goaltender for the Hoskies and made several big saves on Saturday as he held off the Cream team – including a penalty shot by Raymond Brees.
“Technology has done a fantastic job of reconnecting this,” Ram said. “It was great meeting guys I haven’t seen in a long time.
“Technology was a special place for me. It’s where I became a man and it helped me play pro hockey. Now Joe [Shawhan] He’s doing a great job, and it’s good to see Michigan Tech back in the national spotlight.
Paul Tormala (1951-54) was the oldest Husky in the lineup when he competed in the heats.
Darcy Way (1978-82) started among the Black Pipes and was honored after the game with his upcoming retirement and a 100-year reunion celebrating all his achievements.
Other goaltenders who played were Bob Mihos (1973-74), who ended up playing for both teams, and Jimmy Pietila (current student assistant) who had a great second season in black.
Other key events in which hockey students participated were a lunch with Jerry McInnes, a tour of Dee Stadium, a presentation on 100 years of Michigan Tech hockey by Bill Sproule, a golf outing and a 50th birthday party for Blizzard T. Husky.
