The little black dress is a staple in many wardrobes and is now the subject of an exhibition at a Sydney museum.

The Little Black Dress: Fashion Evolution and Social Change, traces how the dress changed in the 20th century and how this evolution reflected the changing role of women in society from 1910 to 1980.

“How did the women’s suffrage movement affect image and textile choices? What did World War II mean to Hemlins? How was the women’s liberation movement and the social change of the 1970s reflected in the clothes worn by women at the time? This exhibition addresses these questions and more through a series of historic garments,” the museum said in a statement.

“While the visual beauty and exquisite artistry of these garments is sure to amaze viewers, the fascinating social story told by these fashion pieces promises to be the highlight of this exhibition.”

Featuring a variety of dresses owned and worn by real women throughout the century, the oldest piece in the collection is over 100 years old.

The Little Black Dress is a traveling exhibit from the Canadian Costume Museum and runs at the Sydney museum until October 3.

The museum is open by donation seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. Please visit the museum’s website at sidneymuseum.ca for more information on this and future exhibitions.
