Lena Barclay and Ellie Nix, 2022 Arlington Tech graduates from Arlington Career Center, won first place gold medals in the television (video) production competition at the recent annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta.

Barclays and the Knicks represented Virginia in the tournament, competing against 37 other American teams.

The Television (Video) Production Competition is a two-person team competition that allows students to plan, shoot and edit a 60-second promotional video over two days. The team is judged on skills such as adherence to the prompt, shot selection and composition, camera stability and focus, sound quality, editing flow and transitions, dialogue/music balance and the “wow factor” of the material.

Tom O’Day, a television and multimedia production instructor at the Arlington Career Center, has waited a long time for this result.

“This competition is very difficult to win. “We’ve competed in this race for over 25 years, and we’ve never been able to overcome the hurdles we face to win,” O’Day said. “It’s incredibly competitive because we’re all state champions.”

Barkley and the Knicks placed second in last year’s tournament, and they are determined to win it all in 2022.

“Their hard work has paid off and they can proudly say they are national champions,” O’Day said.

Barkley will attend Boston University to study film and Nix will attend radio, television and film studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Arlington Career Center television production students also took home a third place medal at the Atlanta competition. Career Center student Scotten Maderall and Arlington Tech students Evan Holt, Rand McEvoy and Antonio Abella competed against 20 other teams in that effort.
