CT AHEC at UConn Health has been awarded a $2 million grant for primary care workforce development

City Area Health Education Center (City AHEC) A program based at UConn Health will receive $2 million over the next five years from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration for its Community Health Education Centers program.

“CT AHEC is an invaluable asset to UConn Health. With renewed HRSA funding, the City AHEC program will continue its mission to improve the health of City residents and communities by providing quality health care, particularly primary and preventive services, and increasing the supply and distribution of health care professionals. facilitating community/academic partnerships,” said Bruce Liang, MD, interim CEO of UConn Health and dean of the UConn School of Medicine.

CT AHEC’s focus on primary care has documented the success of the Professional Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars Program. Anton Allerte, MD, interim associate dean of primary care at UConn, describes it as a great resource, “a proven program that prioritizes professional students with structured curriculum, experiential learning, role models. and Mentorship” which means that an average of 53% of medical students will be matched with a primary care resident by 2022.

With this funding, CT AHEC serves more than 10,000 students statewide. Signature programs at CT AHEC include:

• Urban Service Track / AHEC Scholars Program
• Community-based experiential training (CBET) programs for health professions students
• College and Youth Health Services Core
• Public health ambassadors
• CT Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
• Biomedical Engineering Discovery Saturday Program

As director of City AHEC, Petra Clark-Duffner is excited about new initiatives coordinated by City AAEC that are designed to improve the overall training of the “Public Health Workforce Development, Community Health Worker and Health Professions Student Interprofessional Safety Program.” The organization.
