| The UAMS College of Health Professions recently announced the promotion of four faculty members:
- Melissa HalversonPharm.D., MPH, has been promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies.
- Nathan JohnsonPh.D., promoted to professor in the Department of Laboratory Science.
- Paul Nelson, MS, has been promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Science.
- Ashley McMillanDDS, associate professor with tenure in the dental center, general practice dental residency.
Johnson is Chair of the Laboratory Science Department and Director of the Medical Laboratory Science Program. He received his Doctor of Philosophy from Mississippi State University, a Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the University of Utah, a Master of Science in Incarnate Word College, and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Louisiana Tech University. He served in the US Air Force for 28 years. In the year Prior to joining UAMS in 2017, Col. Johnson served as the National Director of the Defense Health Agency’s Laboratory Medicine Services Center in Falls Church, Virginia, the nation’s largest laboratory system comprising more than 400 medical facilities, 2,000 tests. stations, and about 8,000 technical staff.
Nelson is the Assistant Program Director of Operations for the Medical Laboratory Science Program. He holds a Master of Science in Health Risk Management and Crisis Communication from Chapman University, a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education and an Associate in Business Management from Wayland Baptist University, and an Associate in Medical Laboratory Science and Applied Science. Associate Professor of Applied Science Science/Technology from the Air Force Community College. He served in the US Air Force for 24 years. In the year Before coming to UAMS in 2021, Lt. Col. This includes increasing the capacity of 0 to 200,000 covid tests per week and managing 90% of the Air Force’s covid test capabilities, including managing $92 million in laboratory supply contracts.
Halverson is the Associate Director of Didactic Education for the Physician Assistant Studies Program. She earned both a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Master of Public Health from UAMS. Halverson serves as director of the UAMS 12th Street Health & Wellness Center, a student-run free clinic that provides UAMS students with an opportunity to learn from one another. She has expertise in interprofessional education and student-run clinics. Prior to joining the Physician Assistant Program, she was a clinical instructor in the Pharmacy Practice Department of the UAMS College of Pharmacy.
Macmillan is the director of the General Practice Dental Residency (GPR) program. She holds a Doctor of Dentistry degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Arkansas. McMillan completed her residency in 2016, where she was among the first dental residents at UAMS. She joined the faculty as a clinical instructor, then served as clinic director, assistant GPR program director, and now program director. Macmillan has a strong government reputation as an authority on hospital-based dentistry.
