When UB students walk into the new Student Health Services Center, they may be surprised at how different it is from the old health center.

“It’s better than I imagined,” said Brian Hamluk, vice president of student life. “It’s spacious, it’s comfortable, it’s quality. You feel like you’re walking into your doctor’s office. This is a huge step forward in our student safety efforts.

The new health center, located at 4350 Maple Road near Sweet Home Road, is now open for business to serve the primary care needs of UB students, replacing the former health center located in Michael Hall on South Campus.

It’s UB. Renting The 13,000-square-foot building will serve as a temporary home for student health services until the university builds a health and recreation center planned for North Campus.

That project — which includes renovating the recreation facilities at Clark Hall on South Campus — is years away from fruition. In the meantime, the Maple Road site will provide a better environment for students at UB to receive medical care, Hamluck said.

“You will see the difference,” said Susan Snyder, director of student health services. “I think they feel it too.”

Handling approximately 24,000 patient visits annually, Student Health Services has It outgrew Michael Hall, built in 1956 as a men’s dormitory rather than a health center. By today’s health care standards, it’s outdated, says Snyder.

“Our new Student Health Services Building is a wonderful example of how UB is transforming our physical environment to meet the needs of our students,” said Vice President for Finance and Administration Laura Hubbard.

“We chose Maple Street for its convenient location, and renovated the space to be welcoming and comfortable; to include state-of-the-art health care practice features; and to enable our student health staff to better practice student health and wellness,” explains Hubbard.

About 30 health center workers began moving to the Maple Road location in July. During the Aug. 10 open house for the UB community, Hamluck and Snyder said a few words and thanked those who helped make the new health center up and running in months.

Visitors enter the building from Maple Road to find a reception desk and waiting area.

Behind closed doors, a series of corridors include more than 20 examination rooms, four treatment rooms and two observation rooms. They are considered “negative pressure” rooms, which both prevent the spread of airborne diseases and allow the center to isolate sick patients from the well, Snyder explains.

The new health center has an in-house pharmacy and laboratory with rapid testing for HIV, pregnancy, urinalysis, mono, flu, strep throat and covid-19. Chiropractic services are also planned.

The university is providing a shuttle service to the Maple Road Health Center from the North and South campuses. The place also has ample parking.

Students must schedule first Appointment If not for visiting the health center, the staff is ready for the influx that comes with the start of a new semester, Snyder said.

“We’re really excited to be here and we’re excited for the students because they’re going to get the space they deserve,” Snyder said. “We’ve provided excellent care for students over the years – and now we have a facility to match it.”
