This week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a new program to install speed control devices on the city’s fleet of vehicles.

On August 11, Adams announced a new pilot program that will install active Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) technology in 50 city fleets to prevent operators from exceeding local speed limits.

“Unlike similar speed reduction technology, the active ISA program installed in city fleets not only sets a maximum speed for the vehicle but can also be adjusted based on the local speed limit. There are two ISA methods: active and passive. In the active system, if the operator of a fleet vehicle tries to drive above the local speed limit “ISA technology activates and automatically slows the vehicle down. Alternatively, the passive system notifies the driver when they are driving over the speed limit. DCAS also expands passive driver alerts into the city’s telematics system,” said the New York City government.

The pilot program costs $80,000 and includes vehicles from agencies including the New York City Department of Transportation, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, New York City Department of Administrative Services (DCAS), New York City Department of Corrections (DOC). ), New York City Business Integrity Commission (BIC), and NYC Parks.

“Speed governors can reduce fuel costs and most importantly save lives,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi. “During my tenure at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, I proudly supported a policy to mandate this innovative technology on 18-wheelers. I am thrilled to see DCAS embrace this new pilot program and look forward to supporting the administration’s ambitious efforts to prevent deadly speeding on city streets.

“Speeding ruins lives, so we need to take action to prevent it, and New York City is leading by example in implementing new technology to reduce speeds on the city’s fleet of vehicles,” said Mayor Adams. “Our roads must be comfortable for everyone, and this technology ensures that speeding in city vehicles is impossible. Because traffic safety is public safety, we must ensure that everyone can safely share the road space.”
